Privacy Policy for owllet
This Privacy Policy explains how owllet handles information when you use the app. owllet is designed as a local-first personal finance application. Your data stays on your device by default. Only when you choose an iCloud feature does relevant data also use Apple CloudKit: private sync across your own devices, private restorable backups, or a shared database for a workspace you explicitly share or accept. owllet does not send your personal or financial data to the app developer, to a proprietary backend server, or to third-party analytics or advertising services.
1. Data stored by the app
owllet may store the following information locally on your device, depending on how you use the app: workspaces, workspace names, icons, colors, modes and sync preferences; accounts, account names, icons, colors, opening balances and creation dates; currencies, currency symbols, formatting preferences and related settings; categories, subcategories, colors, icons and monthly budget amounts; transaction entries, including amounts, dates, source and destination accounts, categories and optional notes; recurring rules and reminder preferences; app appearance and layout preferences; dashboard and navigation settings; local security settings, such as whether biometric authentication is enabled. This information is used only to provide the app's budgeting, account management, transaction tracking and personalization features.
2. Local storage
The data you enter in owllet is stored locally on your device using Apple platform storage technologies, including SwiftData, UserDefaults/AppStorage and Keychain. Data stays local by default. If you enable iCloud sync, selected data is also stored in your private CloudKit database. If you create or accept a shared workspace, its data is synchronized through Apple's shared CloudKit database. iCloud backups are a separate optional feature stored in your private CloudKit database. The app does not operate a proprietary backend server and does not transmit your financial data to the app developer.
3. PIN and biometric authentication
If you enable app lock, owllet may store a hashed version of your PIN in the device Keychain. The PIN itself is not stored in plain text. If you enable Face ID or Touch ID, authentication is handled by Apple's local authentication system. owllet does not receive, store or process your biometric data. The app only receives a success or failure result from the operating system.
4. iCloud and synchronization
owllet uses Apple's iCloud (CloudKit) only when you enable synchronization, create a backup, or participate in a shared workspace. None of these iCloud features is enabled automatically. Workspaces you own use the private CloudKit database of your Apple Account. You can sync every owned workspace, selected owned workspaces, or none of them. Local security settings never leave your device. Workspaces shared with you use CloudKit's shared database and continue to synchronize independently of your private-sync setting until you leave the share or the owner removes your access. Synchronization is handled entirely by Apple's iCloud infrastructure and requires an iCloud account. The app developer operates no financial-data server and cannot access your CloudKit content. Restorable iCloud backups are stored separately in your private CloudKit database, include only workspaces you own, and count against your iCloud storage.
5. Third-party services
The current version of owllet does not use: third-party analytics services; advertising SDKs; tracking technologies; crash reporting SDKs; third-party cloud storage outside Apple's iCloud services; a proprietary backend server. The app does not track you across apps or websites owned by other companies.
6. Data sharing
owllet does not sell or rent your personal or financial data. It shares workspace data only when you explicitly invite another iCloud user or accept a CloudKit invitation. Members of that shared workspace can see its accounts, categories, transactions, recurring items and notes, and members with write permission can change them. Sharing is provided directly by Apple through CloudKit. The app developer does not receive the shared data or operate an intermediary server.
7. Data deletion
You can delete data stored by owllet inside the app where that functionality is available, or delete the app from your device. Deleting an owned synchronized workspace removes its CloudKit zone and ends any share attached to it. Leaving a workspace shared with you removes your participation and local copy without deleting the owner's data. An owner can also revoke your access. Turning private synchronization off removes your owned synchronized workspace data from your private CloudKit database and stops shares you own, but does not leave workspaces shared with you. You can leave those individually from Workspace settings. You can also delete iCloud backups from inside the app. Because owllet does not store your data on a proprietary backend server, the app developer cannot remotely access, export or delete your app data.
8. Children's privacy
owllet is not specifically directed to children. The app does not knowingly collect personal data from children or transmit such data to the app developer.
9. Security
owllet uses Apple platform security features such as Keychain, local authentication and iCloud/CloudKit where applicable. However, no method of electronic storage can be guaranteed to be completely secure. You are responsible for keeping your device, operating system, Apple ID and device passcode secure.
10. Changes to this Privacy Policy
This Privacy Policy may be updated from time to time, for example if new features are added or existing iCloud, backup, workspace or collaboration features change. The updated version will be made available through the app, the App Store listing or another appropriate location.
